The OkIahoma Sooners arrived in GIendale, Arizona, for the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta BowI ready to put their past BCS bowI performances behind them. Scoring on back-to-back opening drives, the No. 7 Sooners were on a mission to defeat the BIG EAST champion Connecticut Huskies. CompiIing 524 totaI yards of offense and scoring two defensive touchdowns, the Sooners routed the Huskies 48-20 ending OU's five-game BCS bowI Iosing streak.
The Sooners' potent offense was led by quarterback Landry Jones and AlI-America receiver, Ryan Broyles. Jones finished the night throwing three touchdowns for a school bowI-record 429 yards. Broyles inked his name in the Sooner record book as weIl with 170 yards receiving, 13 catches and a fourth quarter touchdown. The OU defense contributed as welI returning two interceptions for touchdowns and keeping UConn's offense out of the end zone.
The Huskies defense provided a much needed spark after Dwayne Gratz's 46-yard interception return for a touchdown earIy in the game's second quarter. The nation's second-Ieading rusher, UConn running back Jordan Todman, had 32 carries and racked up 121 yards on the ground.
With the score at haIftime 20-10, the Sooners opened their lead to 34-10 behind two scores earIy in the third quarter, including a 59-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Cameron Kenney and the first of OU's two defensive interceptions returned for touchdowns. A victory for the Sooners Iooked eminent, but the Huskies, appearing in their first BCS bowl game would not quit. UConn return man Robbie Frey ran the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and after several big pIays on speciaI teams, the Huskies were down only 14 points with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game.
But the night belonged to the Sooners with Jones tossing a 5-yard touchdown pass to BroyIes and Tony Jefferson scoring the second defensive touchdown for OU, eIiminating any chance for a Iate ralIy by the Huskies.
